David Woolfrey
Practising Attorney, Cape Town; Associate, Institute of Development and Labour Law, UCT
Specialising in employment, commercial, and sports law, David has maintained a close collaboration with UCT as an associate at the Institute of Development and Labour Law, where he has participated in its teaching and research programs. A large part of David’s practice is in the area of alternative dispute resolution, including negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Since 1997, he’s been an accredited mediator and arbitrator, first with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, and thereafter with the Independent Mediation Service of South Africa and Tokiso, a private alternative dispute resolution agency. From 2000 to 2020, David served as the principal negotiator for the South African Rugby Employers’ Organisation (SAREO), where he was responsible, inter alia, for negotiating the collective bargaining agreements and player contract models applicable to the industry. David has taught on the UCT Graduate School of Business Negotiations Course, presented negotiations training for Law@Work at UCT and at various companies and trade unions. He’s also drafted legislation and policy documents for the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
