Understand the essential elements that should be included in a contract.

MODULE 3 Terms of a Contract and Contractual Obligations
Discover the fundamental terms and clauses of a contract and how to remedy a breach of contract.

MODULE 4 The Consumer Protection Act
Explore the Consumer Protection Act and learn how to apply it.

MODULE 5 Contracts of Sale and Contracts of Lease
Discover contracts of sale and contracts of lease.

MODULE 6 Contracts of Insurance and Agency Contracts
Distinguish between contracts of insurance and contracts of agency and their essential elements.

MODULE 7 Contracting With Businesses
Explore the different types of business entities and their legal requirements for contracting.

MODULE 8 Civil Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Procedures
Explore civil law procedures and alternative dispute resolutions.

MODULE 9 Basic Contract Drafting Skills
Evaluate the instructions received from a client and draft a contract.

Helena Stoop

Attorney of the High Court; Senior Lecturer, Department of Commercial Law, UCT

Helena obtained her LLB degree with distinction from the University of Pretoria in 2006, whereafter she obtained an LLM from the University of Stellenbosch in 2008. In 2009, she qualified as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. During her time in practice, she mostly engaged in litigation, including commercial litigation and medical negligence. She is a senior lecturer in the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Cape Town, as well as an ad hoc lecturer at the University of the Western Cape. She has consulted with small to medium enterprises on aspects of good corporate governance and structure, and has also presented workshops on compliance management aimed at corporate managers in various industries. As part of her community interaction she has run training workshops on business law at the Cape Craft and Design Institute, a not-for-profit initiative seeking to develop skills and empower individuals working in the arts and crafts sector in the Western Cape.

Helena was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship in 2016, and completed her PhD studies at Durham University in 2019. Under the primary supervision of Dr Jonathan Mukwiri, along with Mr Chris Riley, she is conducting research in the nature and extent of both the role and liability of non-executive directors in the South African context, especially in the light of changing legal norms and a greater emphasis on good corporate governance and social responsibility.
