Discover the share market, its associated risk and return, and equity products.

MODULE 4 Interest Bearing Investments
Explore the fixed income market.

MODULE 5 Other Asset Classes and Investments
Learn about the other asset classes and investments available in the investment market.

MODULE 6 Pooled Investing
Discover pooled investments, including retirement funds, unit trusts, and ETFs.

MODULE 7 Offshore Investments
Explore the reasons people invest in offshore investments, the related risks, and other considerations.

MODULE 8 Investment Philosophies and Constraints
Explore the different investment philosophies and the constraints to investing.

COURSE CONVENOR

Francois Toerien

Associate Professor, Department of Finance and Tax, UCT

Toerien lectures investment ethics, alternative investments, equity investments, and corporate finance at third- and fourth-year levels. In his study “The Impact of Aid and Public Investment Volatility on Economic Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa”, Toerien investigated the effects of aid inflows and the volatility of public investment on economic growth in 26 sub-Saharan African countries over the period 1992 to 2011. Alongside supervising postgraduate research, his interests lie in public equities, private equity and entrepreneurial finance, carbon credits and environmentally driven markets, developing market investments, and entrepreneurial finance.
